From 27-30th June 2018, InnovAfrica project participated in the Agricultural Show of Kenya (ASK), Machakos Branch, to create awareness on the Brachiaria technologies. Two Brachiaria grass cultivars Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraes and B. decumbens cv. Basilisk were planted in mini plots at Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization stand within the show ground. Posters with details on the establishment, management and nutritive quality of the grasses were also displayed.
The ASK is an annual event organized by the Agricultural Society of Kenya in partnership with the county and national government. The theme of the 2018 show was Promoting Innovation and Technology in Agriculture and Trade. Normally, it has a wide range of exhibitors including, crop and livestock production, manufacturing companies, financial institutions, research and academic institutions, health sector companies among others. The ASK show is a good forum to provide an opportunity to farmers and other stakeholders to learn new agricultural technologies and business trends across the different sectors of the economy.
The Brachiaria grass was a crowd puller especially dairy farmers, scholars and students. An estimated 770 show attendants visited the Brachiaria grass plots out of which 154 (95 males and 59 females) expressed interest on the grass and registered for receiving seeds.
