The European Commission Directorate of Research and Innovation through its unit for Science and Technology Cooperation with Africa organized a Horizon 2020 Info Day as a pre-conference event during the Africa Higher Education Week and RUFORUM Biennial Conference on 18th October in Nairobi.

Horizon 2020 is the European Commission’s research and innovation program with an allocation of €77 billion funding for a period of seven years (2014-2020). While Horizon 2020 has a large focus on research and innovation in Europe, it offers opportunities for collaboration between European and non-European research institutions including those in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

The Info Day focused on providing information on funding opportunities available for cooperation between Africa and Europe through Horizon 2020 and its successor programs. The Info Day had several speakers from the European Commission who focused on opportunities for African-EU cooperation in science and innovation in Horizon 2020, best practice examples on research projects in Horizon 2020, and networking of suitable partners for Horizon 2020 proposals.

InnovAfrica, a Horizon 2020 supported project was chosen as the best practice example for the day, and Dr. Jacob Mignouna, the BecA-ILRI Hub’s Director made a presentation on InnovAfrica and its activities and shared experiences.

Dr. Mignouna introduced InnovAfrica as a four-year multi-disciplinary project that aims to integrate sustainable agriculture intensification systems, innovative institutional approaches with novel extension and advisory services, and enhance capacity building and knowledge sharing in smallholder farming in SSA through a strong EU-Africa research and innovation partnership… He reiterated that this collaborative effort involves 16 partners from Europe and Africa and spoke on the experiences that come with a partnership involving a diverse group of partners from different geographical locations. The event had over 100 participants in attendance.
